The locomotive consist is sitting at the Mechanical Department’s service tracks area east of the Springfield Diesel Shop. This photograph predates the facility upgrade in 1970 when the mobile sand gantry and covered shed were added.
To the left of the locomotives are the fixed sand towers. In this view, just below the engineer’s side number board, in the distance is a locomotive on the diesel shop pocket track. It is adjacent to the tall yard light tower. Further to the north on the rise is an industry spur with the gray corrugated metal building of Springfield Plywoods, Inc.
In the distance to the right of the locomotives is the Anheuser-Busch grain elevator. Visible is the north extension of this inverse “T” shaped elevator. These silos are reached via an overhead conveyor bridge over the Frisco’s tracks. The elevator is at the far east end of Springfield’s West or Kansas Avenue Yard. It sits immediately east of the former grade crossing with North Broadway Avenue.
The view is looking northeast.

The train is entering the west end of Springfield’s Kansas Avenue Yard. It is on Long Track South 1 or 2. That is the West Speed Repair In Place (RIP) Track above the engines and below the yard light tower. In the distance in front of the lead locomotive is one of the Frisco’s Baldwin VO-1000 switch engines working the west end of the yard bowl tracks.
The photographer is standing very near the intersection of West Division Street and North Ethel Street and the view is looking northwest.

OKC on the main line west of the yard (the yard sets east of the bridge you see in the back ground) and they are about to go under the ATSF and around Union Station trackage. The spur on the fireman’s side went to the connection track with the ATSF. The spur on the engineers side went to Producers CO-OP. Off the switch to Producers was a plant that rendered leather products. Many car load of dead cows were spotted, that made for some interesting smells. One of the switchman like to tell the story of coming eye ball to eye ball while tying a hand brake on a gondola load of cow hides. By looking at the consist I would guess that to be train QSF.
