One Response to U30B 834

    Location is Springfield, Missouri.

General Electric (GE) U30B phase IIb1 locomotive SLSF 834 is east of the Springfield Diesel Shop at Springfield Yard in Springfield, Missouri. This is one of four similar locomotives (SLSF 832-835) fitted with an additional equipment box above cab subbase behind cab on fireman’s side. Box featured 2 side by side doors. The left door had 2 stacked groups of 3 vent louvers. The locomotive was shipped to the Frisco on 11/8/1968.

On the next track over is a General Motors (GM) Electro-Motive Division (EMD) F9B phase I locomotive SLSF 141. The locomotive was received on 1/16/1954. Frisco’s 13 F9B units were equipped with dynamic brakes. The locomotive was received before the railroad had any cab units equipped with dynamic brakes. The locomotive was retired and sold to Precision National Corporation (PNC) on 8/14/1974.

The subject locomotive has a “Save Fuel” decal above the fuel filler pipe. These were applied to the railroad’s locomotives after the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) fuel embargo in October 1973. The oil crisis and large price increases were largely driven by the 1973 Yom Kippur War between Egypt, Syria, and Israel. This narrows the date of the photograph to the 10-month period between October 1973 and August 1974.

The bridge viaduct on the left above the cab of unidentified unit number GM EMD GP7L is North Kansas Avenue Expressway / Missouri Highway 13. The bridge was constructed in early 1970. The photographer is standing in the main diesel shop employee parking lot northeast of the shop.

    View is looking south.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

    Mark
