GP7 541 on a local freight at Altamont, Kansas in February 1970 (Al Chione).
This train is eastbound on the Carthage Subdivision. It is six-tenths of a mile east of the station. Due to the low morning sun angle, this is most likely the eastward Carthage Sub local, scheduled third class Train Number 5410. Per Time Table Number 1, dated October 17, 1971, the scheduled time for the train at this station is 6:40 AM.
The city water tower in the distance is located on Wells Avenue at 7th Street. To the right of the locomotive’s pilot the blond building with the smoke stack in the distance is the southwest most building on the campus of the Labette County High School. This school is located on the northeast corner of High School Avenue and 7th Street.
The train is just west of the grade crossing with Ness Road/County Road 313.
The view is looking northwest.
Special thanks to Mark Davidson.
