FA-1 5228 at Springfield, Missouri (date unknown).
The locomotive consist is sitting at the Mechanical Department’s service tracks area east of the Springfield Diesel Shop. This photograph predates the facility upgrade in 1970 when the mobile sand gantry and covered shed were added.
To the left of the locomotives are the fixed sand towers. In this view, just below the engineer’s side number board, in the distance is a locomotive on the diesel shop pocket track. It is adjacent to the tall yard light tower. Further to the north on the rise is an industry spur with the gray corrugated metal building of Springfield Plywoods, Inc.
In the distance to the right of the locomotives is the Anheuser-Busch grain elevator. Visible is the north extension of this inverse “T” shaped elevator. These silos are reached via an overhead conveyor bridge over the Frisco’s tracks. The elevator is at the far east end of Springfield’s West or Kansas Avenue Yard. It sits immediately east of the former grade crossing with North Broadway Avenue.
The view is looking northeast.
