When we first received the SD38-2s, they were used alone. It became apparent quickly that they needed help with the cuts that were being drug to be humped. The SW1500s were added as seen in this photo, but we had to turn the consist and place the 38s facing west (time table direction) because of problems of school children playing “chicken” with the engineer as cuts were drug to the hump. They would come from the neighborhoods to the west side and cross the tracks to get to their school on the east side just as the engine got to them. We did not know they were on the tracks or preparing to cross the tracks until they would step into view. After turning the consist it further became obvious that we still needed more power, and another SW1500 was considered. However, it was decided to add a GP38 which was done. This matchup of SD38-2 and GP38 was a great combo and made working the hump a dream because of the hump control in the SD38-2s. I am looking forward to the Intermountain SD38-2s which are due soon.
