Can someone tell us why this unit has white numberboards?
This unit along with three others was involved in a fatality head on collision at Mustang, Ok. in 1974. The white number board with black letters signified the fatalities as a result of the accident.
That’s very interesting, albeit a bit morbid. It seems like a railroad would not wish to remind people of such in any way.
The story I had heard on the white number boards was that the units were rebuilt by the ICG because the Frisco shops were too busy. I found pretty quickly the ICG rebuild (of 413 and 686) is mentioned on page 88 of Marre and Sommers’ Frisco in Color.
