The train has just entered the East Belt at Mill St Jct, Springfield, MO. The Volatone air horns are still on the cab roof which indicates that the image was taken not long after the 183’s rebuild date of 1928. It’s most likely train number 12.
Nice touch putting the air horns right above the engineer’s head on the cab roof.
This photo was in the Baldwin Loco Works magazine from back in the ’20s in a two issue article about the Frisco.
