44-Ton Davenport Switcher 1

44-Ton Davenport Switcher 1 at Fort, Smith, Arkansas on June 27, 1958 (G.B. Mott).

This photograph is in the book Frisco Power by Louis A. Marre and John Baskin Harper. It starts Chapter 3, Small Units, on Page 27. The caption indicates the units were in storage, but had been moved outside for their monthly inspection and startup.

Also the Frisco Power caption attributes the photograph to Louis A. Marre. The caption above in Frisco Archive attributes the photo to G. B. Mott.

SLSF 1 was acquired in February, 1942 and used as a trade-in to the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors in February, 1967. During its Frisco ownership the unit was leased from 1958-1964 to Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Company at their car building facility in Bessemer, Alabama.

SLSF 2, visible beyond the turntable pit, was acquired in April, 1942. She was the first Frisco diesel to be retired. It was sold to the Tulsa-Sapulpa Union (TSU) Railway on March 30, 1960. On that railroad it became TSU 2.

Frisco Transportation Company

Frisco Transportation Company

Frisco Transportation Company truck at Kansas City, Missouri (date unknown).

The photograph was taken at the north end of Frisco’s 19th Street Yard. The building in the background above the Frisco Transportation Company’s (FTC) truck tractor nose is the Frisco’s Freight House. Visible is the southeast corner of the two story office section, with the one story freight house section, on a north/south axis, extending to the photo’s left edge.

In the photo’s upper left corner, north of the freight house, is the three level West 12th Street viaduct. This viaduct connects downtown Kansas City, Missouri with the West Bottoms area Central Industrial District. Downtown is high on the bluff to the east (right). The Central Industrial District is in bottom land area near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers.

The view is looking northwest.

The train is crossing bridge 424.7 above the Arkansas River. It is eastbound on the Cherokee Subdivision. On its route it has just passed the flat yard at West Tulsa (MP 425.2). During 1957-1959 this would be rebuilt into a hump yard configuration and renamed Cherokee Yard. The train will soon be arriving at Tulsa Union Depot (MP 423.5).

These are the “new” bridges at this location. The original bridge crossing here consisted of 7 through truss spans on stone piers. These longer span bridges were replaced in order to increase load carrying capacities and clearances.

As seen in this view, the “new” bridges are of deck plate girder design. When these bridges were constructed additional concrete piers were added at intermediate points between the original stone piers. The new shorter deck girders rest on 17 alternating stone and concrete piers. There are 2 parallel bridge spans and tracks over the river. The length of each of the new bridges is 2,807 feet.

The girders made for wonderful advertising space. The lettering indicates “Saint Louis, Kansas City and Texas”, Frisco Lines coonskin, “Memphis, Birmingham and Pensacola”. The photographer is near the Southwest Boulevard street bridge over the the river, downstream of the Frisco’s bridges.

In the distance upstream, above the train, south of the river, is a refinery. Cosden and Company began refining at this location in 1913. In 1925 it became Mid-Continent Petroleum Corporation. Their product lines included “Diamond” and “DX” brands.

Mid-Continent merged with Sunray to become Sunray DX in 1955. Another merger in 1968 between this company and Sun Oil formed Sunray Oil Company (Sunoco). The refinery is located north and west of the Frisco’s yard.

This view is looking west.

The locomotive is sitting in the mechanical department’s service tracks area. In the background to the northeast (left) are the elevator and bulk storage silo for locomotive sand and the diesel shop. Parked alongside is a remote service truck with fuel and sand to resupply locomotives away from the terminal.

In the far distance to the right of the locomotive are the 3 circus style loading and unloading ramps for trailers on flatcars (TOFC) service. Just north of this area, near the northeast end of the yard is the locomotive turntable.

The view is looking east northeast.
