One Response to U30B 845

  1. Mark Davidson says:

    Location is Springfield, Missouri.

The locomotives are east of the Springfield Diesel Shop. The General Electric (GE) U30B phase IIg1 SLSF 845 is the second Extra Reliable (XR) series 4-axle truck unit constructed. The XR series introduced modular electronic components in pressurized electrical cabinets in the locomotive cab. The technology was designed to compete with General Motors (GM) Electro-Motive Division (EMD) dash 2 (-2) line of locomotives that featured similar electrical equipment.

Visible above the unidentified number General Motors (GM) Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP7 is the roof over the lye vat just east of the shop building, south of track 1. The steam heated lye vat was used for cleaning locomotive parts including prime mover engine blocks, traction motor gear case boxes and truck side frames. An overhead monorail craneway provided access for moving items into and out of the vat and its cleaning solution.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!
