One Response to 48 Seat Coach Wichita

  1. Karl Brand says:

The Wichita was on of five “De Luxe” Coaches built by the Frisco. There other were the Enid, the Ft Smith, the Okmulgee, and the Joplin. It began life as the 1077, which was built by AC&F during March 1912. It was rebuilt by the Frisco’ West Shop forces during June 1936. During the rebuilding, the original monitor(clerestory) roof was replaced by a steel turtle back roof, 42 (Not 48) “bucket seats replaced the original seating, and a lounge ante-room was added to each restroom. These DeLuxe cars was common on 107 & 108 during the early ’60’s. Also noteworthy in this image is the coach to which the Wichita is coupled. It is one of the Firefly chair cars, either 752, 754 or 757. The giveaway is the full-width diaphragm of the car. Only the Frisco’s Firefly cars were so equipped. I am surprised that the diaphragm is still on the car at this date.
