Locomotive is sitting in the Mechanical Department’s locomotive service tracks area. The facilities were south of the main line, near the west end yard lead and on the south side of the yard. To the northwest was the location of the passenger depot at 403 Front Street. The modern replacement metal depot is also on the south side, with the wye south to the Ft Smith Subdivision just to the west. The distinctive H-shaped riveted support tower post for the sand tower dates from the steam era.
The 616 is one of the Frisco’s GP7 units equipped for passenger service. The unit included a steam generator in the short hood section. Note the steam generator stack extension near the short hood front. In addition, the unit features between the trucks an extended fuel (rear) and water tank (forward) with separate fluid fill ports under the side sill. By the noted date of the photograph the steam generator would have been deactivated. The equipment was left in place in some units, and replaced with a block of concrete as ballast in other units.
The businesses in the distance are across the road on the north side of Front Street. The building on the left, east of 5th Street, is a former vehicle maintenance garage. Most recently it has been occupied as a bingo hall by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4207. The building on the right at 101 6th Street is the former Monett Garment Manufacturing Company. After sitting vacant for a number of years the building was raised between July 2013 and March 2016.
We believe the railfanning dog is a local community resident.
