   The EMD E units prior to the E8’s were identified by EMD as Exn where x was either an A or B for the type of unit and n was the numerical variant. Thus, these were EA7 whereas the next generation units were identified by EMD as Enx, where n is the generation and x was the type; E8A, etc.
