Killed in this wreck, on Christmas Day 1918, were Engineer E.L. “Polly” Friend and Fireman Ray Manning. The wreck occurred at Keighley (Butler County), Kansas in heavy snow.

    The ICC Report state that the derailment occurred on Dec 26, 1918. The derailment was caused by a broken rail. The ICC engaged the services of an engineer-physicist, and the his report is an early example of the railroad industry’s attempt to understand rail failure.
