Great pic, this is a great caboose to model because of the end platform handrails, notice the roofwalks and ladder have been removed, but look at the end railings, they are completely new fabricated parts that are unlike the other 1200s, these railings look almost exactly the same as the 1400/1700 shop built cabooses. 1249 is the only 1200 series caboose that I have seen with this modification, anybody else see any others like this? fun stuff !

I’d have to say that is about as close to freshly repainted as you can get, they even painted the handbrake chain!

  3. Roger Taylor says:

Say Paul, did you find any red & white when you sandblasted this cab? Or did BN strip the paint before painting it green? Roger

  4. Paul Slavens says:

Roger , I have not stripped 1249 yet, and its impossible to tell just yet because it has several layers of paint that were applied during its 30 year stay at Leon Kansas. It’s interesting to note that we have discovered 1232 was completely stripped of all Frisco paint prior to being painted green, but 1291 was painted green right over the original Frisco “ship it” paint, you can see all the Frisco logos under the green paint on 1291, the logos show up so well that we actually traced them and built stencils from them.

Roger I have always been fond of 1249, even though it looks so rough now its actually very straight and solid. Interesting to note that 1249 has a different interior arrangement than any other 1200-74 series caboose I’ve been inside of. It has the conductors chair and desk in one corner like all of them, but it has long benches in two other corners instead of short seats, just like 1285-92. I assume it was changed when Frisco changed the end railings but I don’t really know for sure.

  6. Paul Bender says:

The caboose is very nice, but I find myself looking at the yard air connection. For those of us who are modelers, yard air is a detail you seldom see incorporated into the details of a yard.

    Paul
